Coach Biographies

Matt Bain, Head Coach

A great 2009-2010 swimming season is upon us! What an amazing year we are looking forward to. The potential of this program is oozing into the gutters and the coaches are excited to get things started! I am a proud alumni of the Piranhas Nation having been a swimmer with the program from 1980- 1989. The sport has given me many gifts; from work ethic to a desire to be awake at 5:00 am (yes, I love mornings)

I have been coaching swimming since 2000 (Head Coach of the Aquarians) and a coach with the Grande Prairie Piranhas since 2002 and have enjoyed each moment on deck.  I am a fully certified NCCP Level II swim coach who has been patiently waiting to complete the final tasks in his Level III (which will occur this fall). I will be coaching the Black team and the National/ Senior team. As well, I will be heavily involved with the other groups via coach development, support, and will be seen on deck each evening working with various swimmers. I am excited to be involved with all facets of the program in a hands on capacity. I am also very excited to be working with the executives; who are full of vision and set to take this program into the new swimming decade in our new pool!

On top of being trusted with the athletic direction of this fine program, I am also a full time instructor with the Grande Prairie Regional College in the PEAK (Physical Education, Athletics, and Kinesiology) department. I am also doing sport psychology with various community athletic programs through the Alberta Sport Development Centre. Being a part of the athletic development of Northwestern Alberta’s youth is incredible and an honor.

On top of being a consummate community professional, education holds a spot near and dear to my heart. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy, a Masters degree in Education, and am working on a second Masters degree in Sport Psychology after stepping away from my PhD in Psychology. I will be restarting my PhD in 2011; shortly after our brand new pool opens!!!! So, trust that I believe as much in the STUDENT part as I do in the ATHLETE part.

Finally and foremost, I am a proud husband to a wonderful wife. Her name is Jennifer and she is a full time student with the GPRC nursing program. As well, she works casual with the health region as a unit clerk. I am also the caretaker to three crazy cats: Scott, Luke, and Nazzy. Family is the core of any successful athlete, coach, or administrator. We operate from a family centered belief system as a coaching staff.

So, as a coaching staff, you can expect a group of enthusiastic professionals who value the relationships that we develop with the athletes on top of the performance we expect from each team. We believe in the Long Term Athlete Development Model and buy into the idea that each athlete requires specific training and space to develop their skills. Do not be fooled though; we are here to enhance the PIRANHAS NATION IN THIS PROVINCE AND AROUND THE COUNTRY!!!!

Please say hello and introduce yourself to me or any of the coaches this year. We hope to be a long standing component in your child’s and your family’s sporting experience. Thank you for choosing the Piranhas and WELCOME TO OUR NATION!

Sarah Robinson

  Blue Coach

My name is Sarah Robinson and I am the main coach of Blue this year, as well as working together with my fellow coaches with Black, Frenzy and Red. I would like to start off with saying how excited I am to be coaching again this year because I had such a blast coaching Frenzy last year!

I just recently finished my grade 12 year, and graduated from the Grande Prairie Composite High School. My plans for the future are continuing on to college and university.

Family is also a huge part of my life, and I believe that family should always come first. You may know my sister, Courtney, as she has been involved in the program for many years, both as a swimmer and a coach. My mom and dad have always been extremely supportive in everything I’ve done, and I am so grateful for that.

Swimming has always been a huge part of my life. I started swimming with the Grande Prairie Piranhas at the age of 6, and swam until I was 17. I started coaching as a Jaws assistant when I was 12, working up to coaching Jaws, followed by Fastrack. Last year was my first year of competitive coaching with the Frenzy group, and I absolutely loved it. I am a fully certified NCCP Level I coach and am hoping to work on my level II this year. This year, my hope is that each member of the team will have the same excitement for swimming as I do. My goal this year is to bring a fun, positive attitude to the team and create an atmosphere where fun, learning and improvement is the number one goal.
